The teenage boy that a Myers Park High School teacher is accused of having sex with was a student in her special education class, according to a police source familiar with the investigation.
The student, listed as 17 years old on a police report, told police that he and Myers Park exceptional children teacher Kristina Ngum, 43, had sexual intercourse at an off-campus location, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
A police report states the sexual activity happened in May, but a court document says the offense occurred Dec. 15.
Ngum turned herself in Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff?s Office after CMPD obtained a warrant for her arrest. Police say they began investigating Ngum on Friday, after the student was arrested on an unrelated drug charge.
A patrol officer pulled Ngum?s car over Friday because the officer noticed the male student was driving the car, according to a police report and the police source close to the investigation. Police are familiar with the student, the source said, and knew he didn?t have a driver?s license.
When the student was questioned afterward, he told police he?d had sex with Ngum, the source said. Police also discovered text messages that support the student?s claim, according to the source.
Court documents show that police cited Ngum with allowing an unlicensed person to drive her car.
Ngum, whom the school system hired last March, has been suspended with pay.
CMS officials said Monday that despite earlier reports, Ngum was not coaching cheerleaders at the school.
Ngum?s husband, who did not give his first name, told The Observer on Saturday night that when his wife was leaving Myers Park High on Friday afternoon to pick up their children, the male student begged her to give him a ride. She was stopped by police on the way home, according to the husband, although he did not say why. He said police found a drug on the student, and the student was arrested.
Ngum?s Facebook page lists her as a 2010 graduate of UNC Charlotte, where she studied special education. She graduated from high school in 1987 in Petaluma, Calif., according to the Facebook page.
In 2008, Ngum was found guilty of driving while under the influence, Mecklenburg County court records show. In 2011, she was arrested on charges of false pretense and misdemeanor larceny. The status of that case could not be immediately determined. Observer researcher Maria David contributed.
