Being a Teacher ? Najib Naili

The first thing I did when I first came back after graduation was to find a job. I received a few offers from the interviews in London during my final year but had to decline most of them due to reasons; low pay, too far from home, not engineering related and most importantly, I expected to be called by Petronas immediately after report duty.

Truth to be told, contacting Petronas HR was a lot of pain. Tried calling them, but unfortunately, they just didn?t pick up phones. They still don?t btw. This is not a secret obviously everyone who has dealt with Petronas HR knows about this. Anyways, I felt very insecure and had to find job alternatives. I was very close to work for Malakoff at that time, that Petronas decided to call me in just a day or two days before I join Malakoff.

And one of the jobs I did during that time was being a tuition teacher. I started off by teaching biology at a tuition center in Bandar Baru Bangi-?Kelas Cikgu Maryam (KCM). Not my best experience but it surely was a start. Biology wasn?t my best subject but the center seemed rather desperate to find a teacher that I decided to lend them a hand, but paid lah. so technically it?s not a favor. I bought myself a Biology reference book and had to revise before each class. Teaching a class pack with students from the local jalan reko students definitely was not the easiest task in the world.

Then I went to Infitah Academy where they find students for me to teach in a one-to-one tuition class. I taught Physics. I enjoyed it very much. and as a matter of fact, I still am. Physics has always been my favorite subject and I believe I can share a lot more based on my experience in engineering school.

This is when I realize that teaching has become a serious business in Malaysia. Education has become so competitive these days that parents don?t mind spending thousands of ringgit monthly for private tuition classes. This is obviously a worrying scene for parents like me.

I did ask parents how much other private tutors charge for an hour class. Lowest is around RM40 and highest reaches RM60. Dead expensive. I remember my?English?tuition last time was only rm50 a month! I obviously don?t charge as high as I believe everyone deserves the luxury of good education. Charging up to RM60 is a little too much and to a certain extend an insult to education in general.

Up till now, I still am a part-time tuition teacher, an independent one thanks to recommendation by previous students and my other blog. I teaches Physics and Additional Mathematics for SPM. I have PMR students as well. I enjoy teaching so much that sometimes I feel my day-to-day job as an engineer is my part-time job and teaching is my main profession. In December last year, I had classes almost every night after 9pm. Though I obviously was tired, I still had the energy to go to classes as I really love what I?m doing.

However, time is a compromise. I want to spend more time with my boys and wife that I have let go some of my weekday slots.

I hope I can become a Physics Sifu one day and transform students from Zero to Hero in their studies and life, not only in the subject that I teach. I pray to Allah that my teaching job is not merely a profession but also an Ibadah ? ilmu bermanfaat for me that?ll be my saham in the day of judgement, in sya Allah.

It?ll be awesome to be called Sifu instead of Cikgu. keh keh keh

I did write some of my teaching philosophies in my other blog, you?re most welcome to explore my teaching thinking at najibhometutor.wordpress.com.

Teaching has definitely teaches me to value the teaching profession a lot more. I learn to appreciate what the teachers had done for me and my friends. I in fact still remember a lot of advice and words of wisdom from my dear teachers. I pray to Allah SWT that they are granted with good physical and mental health and continue to build the society on their very own unique way. Amin.
