Cheers to Healthy Holidays - Happy Home and Family

Just because it?s Christmas does not mean that you should take a break from your healthy habits.? With all the activities during the holidays, it is all the more important to stay healthy ? you do not want to miss a party or two when your body succumbs to fatigue.? You want to stick to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and enough rest.

The sweets and treats of the season are not supposed to be devoured by one person.? You can certainly go for a nibble or two but not a whole platter-ful of cookies and cakes or half a leg of ham.? There are healthy food choices that you can pick ? you can skip the gravy for the roast beef and load your plate with a couple of pieces of veggie sidings.? You can also go for the apple pie without the huge scoop of ice cream and globs of chocolate syrup.

Make time to go for a short jog or to do your mat exercises right in your living room.? If you can have time to party, I?m sure you can make time to get those muscles working.? Besides, exercising can get you in shape for those sexy party dresses.? Be sure to have enough snooze time too.? You do not want to have to pile on concealer just to hide the dark circles on your eyes.

3 Biggest New Gaming IPs of 2012 - Where Do They Go From Here ...

2012 was a rough year for those of us who like a little originality in our video games. Analysts claim that the changing of a generation means a smaller wave of new ideas, but it?s also the time for a few nice gems to fall through the cracks.

Anyone remember a nice little game called Okami? Ahhh..what a nice game. The Zelda inspired adventure quest was released during the same year as the Xbox 360, and still managed to find a solid fanbase even after the following generation had gotten underway.

Six years later, and here we are again. The Wii U has been launched. The eighth generation of games is upon us, and we have three fledgling series from the past year which, unlike Okami, have the potential to carry over into the new generation and become fully fledged franchises. The questions are ?Do their publishers want them to?? and ?Do we want them to??

Dishonored

Dishonored-600x300

The obvious one of the group. Dishonored is the poster child for late generation original IPs. Arkane Studios? marvelous first-person stealth assassination game is brimming with original mechanics and unique settings.

However, the true secret of the game?s success is that it doesn?t stray too far from most of our established conventions. First-person shooting, stealth, a hooded AND masked silent protagonist, dystopian cities on the rink of catastrophe. Dishonored is a huge success not only for its originality, but also in the brilliant reinterpretation of elements we often associate with video games.

It manages to walk that fine line between being inoffensive to the casual market , not scaring them off with bright graphics or radically different gameplay, while still providing enough new ideas for the hardcore crowd to drool over and get their dose of something special.

Will it happen?

Bethesda has expressed interest in following up Dishonored stating that it is ?exceeding expectations.? They?re a company that obviously wants to make a jump into being a publishing force in the industry, and they need strong franchises like Dishonored to do it.

This isn?t the last time we?ll see this stealth series.

Do we want it?

Now?s the tricky part. Games like Dishonored are really difficult to follow up on. When I play it, I think of the splash BioShock had made a few years ago. Here was a wonderful self-contained game which wrapped up a clever story that destroyed its brilliant settings with one quick stroke. No franchise seemed like it could ever be born from it, but we enjoyed it so much, we didn?t need it to.

Of course, the world reacted with ?WHY?? when BioShock 2 was announced and looked almost entirely like the same game. Despite a strong reception, many still dismiss it as an unrequested sequel.

Now we have Bioshock: Infinite, and gamers are reacting with ?YES!? It?s new, it?s fresh, it?s a brand new take on the mechanics laid down by the original. If Bethesda wants to keep Dishonored critically successful, I think they?d have to avoid the tempting lure of annual releases and really put a decent amount of time and effort into making it something fans want. Otherwise, I don?t think it could survive or compete with the big boys, and I don?t think I would want it to either.

I would rather Dishonored be a wonderful one-and-done video game than turn into a throw away franchise left to be revived somewhere down the line by some nostalgic lunatic developing through Kickstarter funding. Take your time, Arkane. Take your time.

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping-Dogs-DLC

Sleeping Dogs?started out as a new IP that was picked up by Activision to become a sequel in the True Crime?line. Square Enix bought the scraps of True Crime: Hong Kong from Activision, and they quickly re-named the project to make it their own baby. It was a new IP once more. The result was a relatively popular success in a year where developers kind of grasped the idea that we are sick of open-city sandbox knock-offs, and all we want to play right now is Grand Theft Auto V.

As for Sleeping Dogs, the Hong Kong underworld storytelling and martial arts, similar to Batman?s fighting style, gave it a unique edge over anything that had really come before it. There is plenty of room to expand on a potential series, but how does Square Enix feel about that?

Will it happen?

Ehhh?I?m thinking no. Remember, Square Enix purchased a partially completed game. A sequel would have to have to be built entirely from the ground-up, and judging by Square Enix?s loss of profits over this past year and blaming it on an ?under-performing HD title,? I don?t see them following up Sleeping Dogs any time soon.

Besides, they have plenty of other series to pry from the minds at Eidos. Hitman, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, and Just Cause all have a lot more name recognition and solid legacy.

Sleeping Dogs was nothing more than a hold-over game designed to keep us happy until the big boys came out, and very rarely do these hold-over games become big franchises for themselves anymore. Dead Space was the only one that comes to mind.

*Editor?s note from Joey: I disagree. I think we?ll see a new Sleeping Dogs?in the next four years.*

Do we want it?

As I said, the open-city sandbox is taking a break for now, but once Grand Theft Auto V gets released, you know all the copycats will come strolling along afterwards, looking to cash in on the hype surrounding the genre. That?s the only way I can see Square Enix ever making a new Sleeping Dogs. It?s kind of ironic because that?s what every Japanese RPG team has been doing to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest for the last 25 years.

And yes, there are plenty of other option besides Sleeping Dogs. The Hong Kong setting is nice for those who like their cinema, but Grand Theft Auto V is going to change how we view things. Not to mention we?ve already had a look at Watch Dogs and what the future of urban sand-boxing has in store for us next generation. Do we really need two similar games titled ?Dogs??

Dragon?s Dogma

dragonsdogma

Dragon?s Dogma was the sleeper hit of the summer, selling well over 1 million units worldwide and leading Capcom into one of their biggest financial seasons of all time.

The open world RPG leans much closer to the western approach to the genre, not unlike The Elder Scrolls, but it still retains a distinct Japanese feel thanks to its flashy combat and character design.

The director of Devil May Cry 2, 3, and 4 also developed this game, his first time working with an original IP. His influence on the game is obvious. It is hard, rock solid hard, and he also obviously has no idea how to make an open world game because it was rife with problems that left it as one of the most emotionally taxing titles in recent history.

Will it happen?

Absolutely. Capcom loves Dragon?s Dogma. Not only did it bring them in hundreds of millions of yen, but it was also developed in-house, a surprisingly rare thing for Capcom these days. The global homegrown success story has hopefully given Capcom the confidence they need to start making their own games again.

They not only love the product, but they loved the money it generated as well. I would suspect this could continue to be a strong summer franchise before the big games all come out. I wouldn?t expect them to push this into the holiday season, but then again, this is Capcom. They?ve never been one to wrap their heads around the idea of ?too much of a good thing.?

Do we want it?

Absolutely! Dragon?s Dogma has the foundation of a really solid action RPG series. Great combat, excellent character customization, interesting multiplayer ideas, a feasible fantasy world to build upon. This game looks like it should work on paper, but once you get your hands on it, it becomes obvious why this wasn?t such a bigger hit.

Capcom?s inexperience with open world RPGs began to raise it?s head with a wide variety of questionable decisions. No fast-travel? The cumbersome menus? The confusing quest boards? The overly large armor selection? Not to mention, the game needs a driving force to push it forward. Often times I would play it and not want to do anything but screw around because I didn?t care what came next or what ability my pawn or I could learn.

Director Hideaki Itsuno needs to play a lot of Skyrim between now and Dragon?s Dogma 2?s production to figure out what they did right and what they missed the mark on. Should he do that and turn the cumbersome journey into the amazing adventure it deserves to be, Capcom could become a leader in RPGs once again.

Hill's clutch shot pushes Pacers past Lakers 79-77

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? George Hill's high-arching shot over Dwight Howard went in with 0.1 seconds left, and the Indiana Pacers withstood Kobe Bryant's 40-point performance and the Lakers' last-minute rally for a 79-77 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Hill scored 19 points and hit that enormous clutch shot for the Pacers, who won their third straight road game over the Lakers after losing 11 consecutive regular-season games since Staples Center opened in 1999.

The Pacers' sturdy defense stifled the Lakers' up-tempo offense for most of the night, turning the game into an ugly grind before the thrilling finish.

Bryant hit a tying 3-pointer with 24.5 seconds left and produced the 114th 40-point game of his career despite playing with an apparent case of the flu for the Lakers, who dropped to 2-3 under new coach Mike D'Antoni.

David West scored 16 points and Paul George had 12 in the opener of Indiana's four-game road trip.

The Lakers flirted with the lowest-scoring game and worst shooting percentage in franchise history before scoring eight straight points in the waning minutes, tying it at 74 on Howard's dunk with 1:56 to play. After West made one free throw, Howard and Metta World Peace combined to miss four straight free throws, dropping Los Angeles' performance at the line to 23 for 43.

After Hill made a running shot, Bryant hit a 3-pointer in front of the Lakers' bench to tie it.

The Pacers wound down the clock for Hill, who beat Pau Gasol off the dribble and arched his shot over the leaping Howard, who blocked four shots and scored 17 points despite 3-of-12 shooting at the free throw line.

Before outscoring the rest of his team combined, Bryant missed the Lakers' morning shootaround when he fell ill. He spent the day in bed, drinking fluids and listening to Bob Marley, before giving another high-scoring performance, albeit with 10 turnovers and 12-for-28 shooting.

The Lakers returned from a three-game trip for a three-game homestand, their final multigame stretch at home before Christmas. After playing six games in a nine-day stretch earlier this month, the Lakers are clearly running near empty ? and they had little to give in the first half against Indiana.

The Pacers jumped to an early lead and hung on to it despite falling into a 1-for-23 shooting slump in the first half, playing more than 12 minutes with just one field goal. The Lakers couldn't take advantage, missing 14 of their 18 shots in the second quarter and repeatedly failing to move the ball at D'Antoni's preferred pace.

Bryant made five of his first six shots, emulating his many strong performances with the flu, but fell into a 1-for-10 slump before getting rolling again late in the third quarter while Los Angeles made a 13-2 run. Bryant had nine turnovers in the first three quarters, but also had 29 points ? more than his teammates' combined 28.

NOTES: The Pacers stay in California to face Sacramento and Golden State before stopping in Chicago on the way home from their trip. ... The Lakers handed out bobblehead dolls in the likeness of the late Chick Hearn, their beloved broadcaster who would have turned 96 on Tuesday. ... Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Kaley Cuoco, Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed and Tenacious D band members Jack Black and Kyle Gass watched from courtside.

Chavez's return to Cuba for treatment rattles Venezuela

CARACAS/HAVANA (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez flew into Cuba on Wednesday for cancer-linked medical treatment that revived questions about the viability of his socialist rule and left Venezuelans again guessing about his exact condition.

After weeks of scarce public appearances, Chavez, 58, announced in a letter on Tuesday that he was going to Havana for therapy known as "hyperbaric oxygenation" - a method used to reduce bone decay caused by radiation therapy.

Communist Party daily Granma confirmed his arrival in Cuba.

In Havana, Chavez enjoys the friendship of past and present Cuban leaders Fidel and Raul Castro, plus guaranteed privacy on the tightly controlled Caribbean island.

Venezuelans, who have been endlessly speculating about Chavez's cancer since it was discovered in mid-2011, were not sure what to make of the latest twist - debating whether it was normal post-radiation treatment or a serious downturn.

"I really don't know what he has," Chavez's cousin, Guillermo Frias, told Reuters from the president's rural hometown state Barinas. "But anyway, I always pray for him every night. I stop at a shrine on the corner and always remember him.

"I hope he recovers fine. I'm sure he will. The election campaign was tough for him. He went too far."

Though he had declared himself cured, Chavez appeared exhausted at the end of his successful presidential re-election bid in October. He later admitted radiation had taken its toll.

"INVISIBLE MAN"

The normally garrulous and omnipresent leader has made only a few, relatively short public appearances, mainly on state TV, at his presidential palace since his October 7 win. One opposition newspaper dubbed him "The Invisible Man".

Unlike multiple past trips to Cuba, during treatment for three operations on two tumors in his pelvic area, state TV did not show images of Chavez departing or arriving this time.

Chavez has an open-ended authorization from Congress to travel, but aims to be back at least for the January 10 start of his new term, if not for a couple of regional summits before.

His absence leaves newly appointed Vice President Nicolas Maduro, 49 - a former bus driver and union leader - in a prominent position amid speculation among Venezuelans over who could replace Chavez should he leave power.

Congress head Diosdado Cabello, a former military comrade of Chavez's, also is frequently touted as a possible successor to lead the ruling Socialist Party. Under the constitution, an election would have to be held if Chavez leaves office within the first four years of his new six-year term.

Chavez's return to Cuba overshadowed the buildup to state elections on December 16, where the opposition aims to overcome disappointment at the presidential loss to make inroads.

A prolonged absence could potentially postpone major policy decisions, such as a widely expected devaluation of the bolivar currency after heavy pre-election state spending.

After removal of a first cancerous tumor, Chavez wrongly declared himself cured in late 2011. He again pronounced himself cancer-free in mid-2012 after removal of a second tumor.

BONDS RISE

The hyperbaric oxygenation therapy, or HBOT, he was due to receive involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

In addition to the bone-weakening side effects of radiation on cancer sufferers, experts say HBOT is used to treat conditions including infections, abscesses and decompression sickness - or the "bends" - that can afflict deep sea divers.

Nelson Bocaranda, a prominent pro-opposition journalist, said Chavez had been suffering intense pain in his bones and waist area of late, forcing him to rest and take pain-killers.

In his widely read "Rumors" column on Wednesday, Bocaranda published a supposed medical report from Havana's Cimeq hospital, with a relatively uninflammatory diagnosis.

"It's a matter of giving him therapy for pain and stabilization so he has a better quality of life," said the report, which could not be confirmed.

"His physical state is normal; loss of weight reasonable; high tension constant; abdominal nausea and pains; good emotional state but with variable depression; tolerable pain thresholds and reaction to treatment applied. He's rested in recent days and had little pressure from government functions."

Venezuelan officials, who frequently decry Bocaranda as a gossip and liar, gave no details of Chavez's health. One medical source with knowledge of Chavez's treatment said the HBOT may last several months and was a common "palliative treatment."

An opposition leader, Henry Ramos Allup, demanded transparency from the government. "The president's illness is a matter of state. The country has the right to know how exactly how serious it is," he said.

Given investor hopes for a more market-friendly government, Venezuela's widely traded bonds not surprisingly have risen.

On the streets, there was both solidarity and skepticism concerning Chavez.

"He exploited this thing of going to Cuba during the election campaign," motorbike taxi driver Omar Rivas, 55, said, noting the wave of sympathy Chavez received in the past.

"That man doesn't have anything. He was never sick."

Teacher Ana Maria Garcia, 26, had a kinder reading.

"I don't understand what he has, but I hope he recovers quickly. He's a winner," she said.

Green Blog: Delhi and Shanghai Aim to Reduce Plastic Trash

HONG KONG ? Two recent items of news from Asia appear to show that the region?s nations are starting to take seriously the ever-growing amounts of plastic trash they produce.

In India, plastic bags, sheets, films and the like were banned in Delhi beginning last week. The city is attempting to rein in the 250,000 tons of plastic waste it generates every year. My colleagues on the India Ink blog have written about the development here.

And beginning in February, the authorities in Shanghai have decided to fine manufacturers that use ?excessive? packaging, according to a recent article in the state-run China Daily newspaper.

The article was thin on details like what would constitute ?excessive? and who would make that determination. But the new regulations permit fines of as much as 50,000 renminbi, or about $8,000.

The China Daily piece also cited a recent poll showing that the vast majority of shoppers in China considered excessive packaging to be both a nuisance and a problem for the environment.

Judging by the ample and often superfluous wrapping that frequently envelops goods in China?and many other countries, consumer goods manufacturers and retailers have not gotten the message; many still appear to consider packaging a selling point they cannot do without.

A fine of 50,000 renminbi may do little to change that.

It is unclear how strictly the new regulations in Shanghai and Delhi will be enforced, or whether they will be extended to other parts of China and India.

Still, overall awareness of plastic pollution has risen in recent years, as I?have written about before.

The sheer amount of plastic that is produced, often to be used just once ? think shampoo bottles and industrial packaging ? is a growing problem. Much of it ends up in landfills or, even worse from an environmental point of view, in rivers or oceans.

Solutions exist, including turning plastic into goods or fuel.

Much of the future increase in global plastic use will occur in developing Asia, where per capita consumption is expected to soar from levels that at the moment are well below those in the West. At the same time, garbage collection and recycling infrastructures remain woefully inadequate.

The initiatives in Shanghai and Delhi thus have global resonance, and their progress will be worth watching.

US pivot to Mexico?

A new leader of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, takes office with enough hope of reform that it argues for the US to draw closer to its neighbor.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / November 28, 2012

Mexican President-elect Enrique Pe?a Nieto shakes hands with President Obama at the White House on Tuesday.

AP

The date remains uncertain. But at some point Mexico?s reputation in the eyes of Americans will start to shift from being a burden ? drugs, migrants, violence, corruption ? to becoming a partner as close as Canada, Japan, or Britain.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '

Perhaps that date is Dec. 1.

That?s when a new president, Enrique Pe?a Nieto, takes office with far more political pull than recent presidents to push through the kind of reforms that have been moving Mexico closer to the United States over the past decade. He?s also taking over an economy that is fast rivaling China as a magnet for global investors.

President Obama welcomed Mr. Pe?a Nieto to the Oval Office on Tuesday, perhaps with an eye to raising Mexico higher in his second-term agenda. Indeed, in addition to the ?pivot to Asia? that Mr. Obama recently proposed for US foreign policy, he might also pivot the US toward its southern neighbor, which is now its third largest source of oil and second largest export destination.

Few in the US have grasped the changes in Mexico. It is more open to the world, with 44 free-trade pacts and greater manufacturing exports than the rest of Latin America combined. This has forced it to listen more to its foreign critics in honoring the rule of law, labor reform, and human rights. Its politics are more competitive, its civil society and media are stronger, and its governing bodies, such as the central bank and Supreme Court, are more independent.

Mexico even seems posed under Pe?a Nieto?s coming six-year term to lessen the self-defeating nationalism that has prevented reform of its government-run oil monopoly. Opening Pemex to private, even foreign, investment would mark a shift from the historical Mexican resentments that have also dogged its politics. And it would help turn North America into the world?s energy giant.

One still-uncertain measure of Mexico?s changes will be in the political behavior of Pe?a Nieto?s Institutional Revolutionary Party. Has the PRI, which ruled from 1929 to 2000, shed its corrupt, power-hungry ways since it lost power ? and democracy bloomed?

The PRI?s comeback comes as younger Mexicans and a rising middle class are less tolerant of corruption. Mexicans have also tired of the strategy of outgoing President Felipe Calder?n, who relied heavily on the Army in curbing the power of the drug cartels. While homicides are down this year, the killings since 2006 have pushed Mexico to rethink this ?war on drugs.?

Pe?a Nieto plans to further beef up the federal police and improve the judiciary. He needs more US assistance for that. The PRI also holds more power in the legislature than his predecessor?s party, PAN, which allows it to better pass key reforms.

America?s interest in Mexico should also be drawn to the fact that the Mexican economy has been growing faster than that of the US. And far fewer Mexicans are fleeing to the US for jobs.

All this argues for stronger American engagement with a nation of 113 million people on its border that is becoming a global economic player. Obama can help lead that necessary pivot.

Blogging my way to health and fitness: Types Of Eczema Natural ...

Eczema is a type of skin condition affecting about 10 to 20 percent of people. It comes as flaky, itchy, red skin that usually appears as an inflammatory response to various physical and environmental irritants. All people can get this skin condition but those with family history are more susceptible to getting the disease. Currently, there is no cure for the condition but eczema natural remedies can help in alleviating the symptoms.

Normally, it is the skin that will provide protection against infections and various diseases. However, this protection may be compromised once irritants trigger oversensitivity and bring about negative immune responses which result to an eczema reaction. Patches in the skin may turn flaky, itchy and also become red. Sometimes, the affected skin even starts oozing out liquids.

After your skin has healed, it will start becoming thicker and then radiate a somewhat leather-like appearance at all the affected spots. This specific process is called lichenification. Know that other factors may trigger the allergic reaction as well. These may include viruses, meat, soaps, fruit, dust and animal dander. Sometimes, an environmental trigger such as stress may cause reactions too.

You may want to try out several natural treatments to relieve you of the symptoms. For instance, you apply pastes or use special bath mixtures or homemade lotions to make your skin a lot more moisturized. You might also want to consider changing your eating habits. A common thing all these remedies have is that their ingredients or fragrances are not produced chemically.

It has been said that majority of people with the condition tend to be more sensitive to chemical substances. Unfortunately though, most products out on the market are chemically-induced. Hence, avoiding some over the counter body care lotions and prescriptions treatments will be necessary.

There are some people who change their dietary habits as a means to treat the troublesome skin condition. Avoiding artificial additives, preservatives and processed foods which are what usually cause allergic reactions often helps. Staying hydrated may also be vital to avoid getting severely dry skin. Taking in water daily usually helps in reducing skin disorders.

You might also want to prepare some topical mixtures of herbal or organic ingredients. Mix some dandelion and spearmint leaves with olive oil, jojoba oil, mashed avocado and papaya seeds. Try out combinations of camphor and sandalwood as well. Mix them into a paste and then apply this on to your skin surface. If you do not want to go through the preparing the ingredients on your own though, you may consider getting them off store shelves.

Oatmeal products have long been employed as eczema treatments as well. Many experts suggest grinding the oatmeal into very fine powder and then putting them into bathwater right before soaking in. They may also be filled into cloth packets and attached to the bathtub faucets. Soothing herbs such as chamomile may be used for this as well. Once water starts running through, their healing properties will be released.

Oatmeal has long been known to be among the best eczema natural remedies. This may also be used for various skin conditions including psoriasis and poison ivy. In addition, it can remedy skin which have become severely dry.

Egypt mass protests challenge Islamist president

CAIRO (AP) ? More than 200,000 people flocked to Cairo's central Tahrir square on Tuesday, chanting against Egypt's Islamist president in a powerful show of strength by the opposition demanding Mohammed Morsi revoke edicts granting himself near autocratic powers.

Waving Egypt's red, white and black flags, crowds of protesters marched across Cairo to stream into the iconic plaza, as opposition to the decrees issued last week turned into a broader expression of anger against the rule of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood.

In the evening, Tahrir ? birthplace of the uprising that toppled authoritarian president Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago ? was filled with a crowd that appeared to be at least 200,000. The protest was comparable in size to the daily Tahrir rallies during last year's 18-day uprising.

Ringing out at the square was the central chant of the 2010-2011 Arab Spring revolts: "The people want to bring down the regime," and "erhal, erhal" ? Arabic for "leave, leave."

"Suddenly Morsi is issuing laws and becoming the absolute ruler, holding all powers in his hands," said protester Mona Sadek, a 31-year-old engineering graduate who wears the Islamic veil, a hallmark of piety. "Our revolt against the decrees became a protest against the Brotherhood as well."

But Gehad el-Haddad, a senior adviser to the Brotherhood and its political party, said the opposition was "very divided" and that Morsi would not back down. "We are not rescinding the declaration," he told The Associated Press. Morsi's edicts effectively neutralize the judiciary, which was the only branch of government in a position to balance Morsi, who holds not only executive but also legislative authority.

The staunch stand taken by Morsi and his Brotherhood sets the stage for a long-drawn battle with the opposition that could paralyze the nation at a time when its economic woes are deepening, security continues to be tenuous and strikes by an entire spectrum of white and blue collar workers show no sign of abating.

If the opposition seeks to sustain large protests to force Morsi to back down and if the Brotherhood responds with mass rallies of its own, as some of its leaders have hinted, it would raised the prospect of greater violence after a series of clashes between the two camps in recent days. Already, newspaper commentators are speaking of a divided nation that may be looking at the prospect of a civil war.

Even as the crowds swelled in Tahrir, clashes erupted nearby between several hundred young protesters throwing stones and police firing tear gas on a street off Tahrir leading to the U.S. Embassy. Clouds of tear gas hung close to the ground at the area. Clashes have been taking place at the site for several days, fueled by anger over police abuses, separately from the crisis over Morsi. A photographer working for the AP, Ahmed Gomaa, was heavily beaten by police using sticks while covering the clashes Tuesday. Police took his equipment, and Gomaa was taken to hospital for treatment.

Protests also took place in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and other citie

The edicts have energized the liberal and secular opposition after months of divisions and uncertainty while Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups rose to dominate the political landscape. But the backlash has been further fueled by broader anger over what critics see as the Brotherhood's monopolizing of power after its election victories the past year for parliament and the presidency.

Raafat Magdi, an engineer, said, "We want to change this whole setting. The Brotherhood hijacked the revolution."

"People woke up to his (Morsi's) mistakes, and in any new elections they will get no votes," said Magdi, who was among a crowd of around 10, 000 marching from the Cairo district of Shubra to Tahrir to the beat of drums and chanting against the Brotherhood. Reform leader Mohammed ElBaradie led the march.

Former presidential candidate Amr Moussa, now a prominent opposition leader, said the protest showed "where the nation's political forces stand on the constitutional declaration."

"Wisdom dictates that the declaration must be reconsidered," Moussa, a former Arab League chief, told the private CBC TV station by telephone.

Morsi says the decrees are necessary to protect the "revolution" and the nation's transition to democratic rule.

His declaration made all his decisions immune to judicial review and banned the courts from dissolving the upper house of parliament and an assembly writing the new constitution, both of which are dominated by Islamists. The decree also gave Morsi sweeping authority to stop any "threats" to the revolution, public order or state institutions. The powers would last until the constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not likely before spring 2013.

The decrees, said the Brotherhood spokesman el-Haddad, "cemented the way forward" by protecting the assembly and upper house.

In a series of Tweets, the Brotherhood dismissed the rallies, saying even while the square was packed that the turnout was "low" and showed a lack of support for the opposition. Several Brotherhood officials made the rounds on the evening talk shows, calling on the opposition to start a dialogue with the presidency and playing down the significance of the Tahrir protest.

Morsi's supporters canceled a massive rally they had planned for Tuesday in Cairo, citing the need to "defuse tension" after a series of clashes between the two camps since the decrees were issued Thursday. Morsi's supporters say more than a dozen of their offices have been ransacked or set ablaze since Friday. Some 5,000 demonstrated in the southern city of Assiut in support of Morsi's decrees, according to witnesses there.

The opposition says the decrees give Morsi near dictatorial powers by neutralizing the judiciary at a time when he already holds executive and legislative powers. Leading judges have also denounced the measures.

But many who joined Tuesday's protests lashed out more broadly against the rule of Morsi, who came to office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president. For months, criticism has been growing that Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists are monopolizing power in the government and trying to dictate the next constitution while not doing enough to tackle the country's multiple economic and security woes.

Reda Hassan, owner of a car parts shop, said he voted for Morsi in this past summer's election, but "he fooled us. He did nothing since he was elected. ... Now Tahrir says go away."

A fellow protester, Saad Salem Nada, said, "I am a Muslim and he made me hate Muslims because of the dictatorship in the name of religion. In the past, we had one Mubarak, now we have hundreds," referring to the Brotherhood.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, some 15,000 anti-Morsi protesters gathered outside the main court at the center of the ancient city. Thousands of Morsi supporters arrived at the same spot later and there were scuffles between the two sides. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Late Tuesday, several hundred anti-Morsi protesters stormed the Brotherhood's offices in the city, tossing furniture and documents out the windows and setting the building on fire, according to witnesses.

On Monday, Morsi met with the nation's top judges and tried to win their acceptance of his decrees. But the move was dismissed by many in the opposition and the judiciary as providing no real concessions.

Morsi told the judges that he acted within his rights as the nation's sole source of legislation, assuring them that the decrees were temporary and did not in any way infringe on the judiciary, according to presidential spokesman Yasser Ali, who said the president had no plans to change or amend his decrees.

According to a presidential statement late Monday, Morsi told the judges that his decree meant that any decisions he makes on "issues of sovereignty" are immune from judicial review.

The vaguely worded statement did not define those issues, but they were widely interpreted to cover declaration of war, imposition of martial law, breaking diplomatic relations with a foreign nation or dismissing a Cabinet. Morsi's original edict, however, explicitly gives immunity to all his decisions and there was no sign it had been changed.

Monday's presidential statement did not touch on the immunity that Morsi gave the constitutional assembly or the upper chamber of parliament, known as the Shura Council. It also did not affect the edict that the president can take any measures he sees as necessary to stop threats to the revolution, stability or public institutions. Many see that edict as granting Morsi unlimited emergency powers.

The Shura Council does not have lawmaking authorities but, in the absence of the more powerful lower chamber, the People's Assembly, it is the only popularly elected, national body where the Brotherhood and other Islamists have a majority. The People's Assembly was dissolved by a court ruling in June.

Rights lawyers and activists, however, dismissed Morsi's assurances as an attempt to defuse the crisis without offering concrete concessions.

One of the lawyers, Ahmed Ragheb, described the presidential statement and Ali's comments as "playing with words."

"This is not what Egyptians are objecting to and protesting about," he said. "If the president wanted to resolve the crisis, there should be an amendment to his constitutional declaration."

On Tuesday, the influential Judges' Club, a sort of union led by an outspoken Morsi critic, vowed in a statement to escalate its resistance to the decrees. Judges and prosecutors in some parts of the country held a strike for a third day, leaving many courtrooms empty across the nation.

Our true dawn: Pinning down human origins

The argument over when our lineage split from chimps is about to be settled, with colossal consequences for prehistory

LINE them up in your head. Generation after generation of your ancestors, reaching back in time through civilisations, ice ages, an epic migration out of Africa, to the very origin of our species. And on the other side, take a chimp and line up its ancestors. How far back do you have to go, how many generations have to pass, before the two lines meet?

This is one of the biggest and hardest questions in human evolution. We know that at some point we shared a common ancestor with chimps, but exactly when - and what that ancestor was like - have been maddeningly hard to pin down. Palaeontologists have searched for fossil remains, and geneticists have rummaged through the historical documents that are human and chimp DNA. Both made discoveries, but they did not see eye to eye.

No more. New estimates for when our lineage and chimps went their separate ways suggest that some of our established ideas are staggeringly wrong. If correct, they demand a rewrite of human prehistory, starting from the very beginning.

When was that beginning? The obvious first place to look for answers is in the fossil record. But fossil humans - or more strictly hominins, the group that includes us and all our extinct relatives from after the split - are notoriously thin on the ground and difficult to interpret.

Geneticists have more to work with. DNA contains telltale traces of events in a species' past, including information about common ancestry and speciation. In theory, calculating the timing of a speciation event should be straightforward. As two species diverge from a common ancestor their DNA becomes increasingly different, largely due to the accumulation of random mutations. The amount of genetic difference between two related species is therefore proportional to the length of time since they diverged. To estimate when the human-chimp split occurred, geneticists can simply count the differences in matching stretches of chimp and human DNA and divide it by the rate at which mutations accumulate. This is known as the molecular clock method.

But there's a catch. To arrive at the answer you have to know how fast the mutations arise. And that leads you back to square one: you first need to know how long ago we split from chimpanzees.

To get around this catch-22, geneticists turned to orang-utans. Fossils suggest that they split from our lineage between 10 and 20 million years ago. Using this fudge, geneticists arrived at a mutation rate of about 75 mutations per genome per generation. In other words, offspring of humans and chimps each have 75 new mutations that they did not inherit from their parents.

    Fossils or DNA

This number rests on several big assumptions, not least that the orang-utan fossil record is a reliable witness - which most agree it is not. Even so, it led to a guess that human ancestors split from chimpanzees between 4 and 6 million years ago.

When fossil-hunters hear this number, they cry foul. The lower end of the estimate is particularly hard to swallow. Australopithecus afarensis - an early hominin from east Africa - already has distinctly human characteristics yet dates back at least 3.85 million years. Its canines were small, for instance. And it walked upright.

Both of these traits are considered hominin, meaning they evolved in our lineage after the split and did not appear on the chimp side. And yet it is hard to see how they could have evolved so quickly, in perhaps as little as 150,000 years after the split.

"Geneticists ignored the palaeontologists completely," says Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University in Ohio. "We would get estimates around 4 million years, and yet there are unmistakable and highly evolved hominins that go back almost 4 million years. To claim a 4 million year divergence date is just silly."

Even a 5 to 6-million-year split was met with scepticism. That's largely because of three recently discovered fossils from Africa dating from around the same period. All three predate Australopithecus, but still bear unmistakable marks of humanity. Though the interpretation of the remains is controversial, many regard them as being post-split.

Simply put, the palaeontologists were sure there was little chance that the DNA results were accurate. Humanity, they affirmed, had to be older than the geneticists claimed.

History looks set to prove them right. In the past three years, researchers studying human populations have for the first time been able to observe mutations almost as they happen. And that makes all the difference. Instead of relying on an estimate based on rare fossils, we can now watch the molecular clock ticking in real time. "Until we were able to compare genomes of children with their parents, we could not estimate the mutation rate in humans," says Aylwyn Scally of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK.

Solid Internet Marketing Techniques For The Beginner ? DataGlove ...

Working to build a site to market your products, can be overwhelming. Trying to determine what will attract customers to your site can be a challenging task. Some tips and ideas are listed below that will help you with this task.

For your online business try the ?bill me later? option. Many customers like to pay right away. But there?s other?s who want to pay over a period of time. See if this option works for generating more sales and traffic to your website. You can do a trial period to determine if this works for you.

Making people aware of both the advantages and disadvantaged of your advertised product can make your audience trust your claims more. While you shouldn?t make the negatives of your product sound too bad, putting them in with the positives (which should be exaggerated somewhat) is a great way to earn your audience?s trust.

When you send a purchase to a customer by mail, consider including a sample in the box of a new product. For example, if you just got in some new long-lasting batteries you could include a pair in the box to run the electronics the person has bought. It?s a great way for them to test it out.

Use local business directories. Many online business directories will provide free listings. Get your business listed on as many as possible to attract more visitors to your site. Search for the directories that offer free listings, since there is no need to pay for something that you can get for free.

If you intend to spend money on your internet marketing efforts, go after traffic using the appropriate strategies. Pay-per-click (PPC) search engines will turn your money into favorable search rankings. Affiliate marketing programs will pay off other websites for driving traffic to yours. Once you decide to spend money for traffic, make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

Build other websites that revolve around your primary product or subject. Do not create websites that are junk. Take your time and include relevant information. This will keep people at your website longer, and you will be able to trust the links to your website, which is where you will bring in customers and make money.

Make a website for your business. This should be one of the first steps to market your business using the Internet. By setting up a website that is online you can expand your business because you will be able to reach more customers. This also makes it easier for existing customers to find you.

If your business is linked to affiliate businesses, consider brainstorming with other business owners. Combining thoughts and products, will help build exposure for both businesses and boost customer loyalty to both. If the business you choose to work with is competition, choose a neutral product that will not give them an edge.

Use color on your web page. A plain white web page is unlikely to do as much business as one that has an eye-catching color. Experiment a little to see what works best for you and the type of business that you are running. You can also change the style and size of the wording on your page, which will help to draw customers in.

After you get past all the scams out there and realize that internet marketing follows a logical path and not a miraculous one, you can begin to build a solid business. Follow this advice and you will start to turn your ideas into money. Eventually, you might just hit that six-figure mark.

This Trevo Review explains why this is a great internet business that allows you to work from home.

A fire engulfed a garment factory outside Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, trapping many workers and killing at least 112 people in the building without emergency exits.

Authorities said the fire started on the ground floor late Saturday and spread upward, cutting off staircases and preventing workers' escape. Some survivors were rescued from the eight-story building's roof.

Thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives gathered at the burned-out factory Sunday awaiting word on relatives who worked there.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.
