For 25 years, John Schellenger Jr., known by many as Jack, has helped keep Freehold safe, as a member of the Freehold First Aid Squad. Now, the squad that Schellenger has been apart of for so many years is giving back to him in his time of need.
According to a letter from the Freehold First Aid Squad, Schellenger, a former Manasquan High School basketball coach, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and is currently living in a Care One Facility in Holmdel. Due to his condition, he is unable to be discharged from Care One and is now experiencing financial hardship.
To help support Schellenger, the Freehold First Aid Squad has organized a spaghetti dinner to help raise money to offset his financial difficulties. The dinner will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the First Aid Building. Tickets are currently on sale for $10 and will be available at the door.
According to the event's facebook page, there will also be a Chinese auction at the spaghetti dinner. Donations from local business are needed.
All profits from the dinner will be donated to Schellenger and his family. Donations are also being accepted by mailing donations to the Freehold First Aid, Attention: Ashley LaBarbara. All checks can be made out to Jean Schellenger.
In addition to Schellenger?s time on the Freehold First Aid Squad, he has coached basketball at Freehold High School, Manasquan High School, and Marlboro High School. Prior to his sickness, Schellenger also spent his summers working for Cape May EMS, Wildwood EMS, and was a beach lifeguard.
