A leopard mauled at least three people in the northeastern Indian city of Guwahati on Saturday after the ferocious feline ran into a house and attacked the residents.
"We were simply shocked and stunned to find the leopard inside the house and soon the cat started attacking," eyewitness Nipu Das told The Asian Age. "One person was badly injured when the cat mauled his head and face."
One local caught the horrifying scene on camera.
.Wildlife rescue personnel in Guwahati later tranquilized the cat and took it to a nearby zoo for observation. One of the injured was admitted to the hospital, according to CNN-IBN.
Authorities think the leopard, a male between 8- and 10-years-old, came into Guwahati from jungle-covered hills on the city's outskirts. At least 20 leopards have been killed in Guwahati, a city of about one million people, over the past two decades, Rediff News reported.
Encounters between people and wild animals have increased as the city has expanded into previously forested areas.
