NEW YORK (AP) ? Nike went to court Wednesday to prove that Reebok is no shoo-in to promote New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow on apparel.

Nike Inc. claimed in a lawsuit in U.S. District Court that Reebok International Ltd. has used Tebow's name on Jets-related apparel without permission since it was announced last week that Tebow was traded from the Denver Broncos to New York. The Tebow trade occurred just before Nike replaces Reebok on Sunday as the supplier of NFL team uniforms.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, claims that Reebok misappropriated publicity rights, interfered with business relationships and unjustly enriched itself because it failed to get Tebow's permission before launching the new products.

Reebok, based in Canton, Mass., did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. The lawsuit said Reebok did not respond to demands to cease Tebow apparel sales after a Tebow representative sent a letter to the company on Friday.

Reebok is a subsidiary of Adidas AG.

According to the lawsuit, new Nike-supplied uniforms for all 32 NFL teams will be unveiled next week in New York City, kicking off a five-year deal for Nike to be the league's exclusive provider of on-field apparel, including game uniforms and sideline apparel. Reebok had been the supplier for the last decade.

The lawsuit said demands for Tebow-related Jets apparel was intense last week during a normally subdued time for NFL merchandise sales.

It said Nike, based in Beaverton, Ore., believes Reebok was shipping large volumes of Tebow-related apparel products to retailers for sale to the public this week, damaging Nike's ability to capitalize on a "unique and short-lived opportunity."

The lawsuit added that it was unlikely that a consumer who buys an unauthorized Tebow jersey or T-shirt from Reebok this week will purchase an authorized Tebow item from Nike next week.

World News - US paid close to $50000 per shooting spree death ...

Updated at?11 a.m. ET: KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- The United States paid close to $50,000 in compensation for each Afghan killed in the shooting spree attributed to a U.S. soldier in southern Afghanistan, a U.S. official told NBC News on Sunday.

The official, who asked not to be named, would not say exactly how much was paid to the families, but added the amount was close to the $50,000 reported by?Afghan officials.

"The amount reflects the extraordinarily devastating nature of the incident," he said.

Average annual income in Afghanistan is $425, according to the BBC.

U.S. officials paid $50,000 to the Afghan families of the dead. Meantime, Karilyn Bales tells Today's Matt Lauer that her husband "is like a big kid." NBC's John Yang reports.

Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is accused of sneaking out of his base before dawn on March 11 then creeping into the houses of two nearby villages and opening fire on sleeping families within. The U.S. military has charged Bales with 17 murders.

Bales charged with 17 counts of murder in Afghanistan massacre

The 38-year-old soldier is accused of using his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher, to kill four men, four women, two boys and seven girls, then burning some of the bodies.

The Associated Press earlier reported that the families of the dead received $50,000 for each person killed on Saturday at the governor's office, citing Kandahar provincial council member Agha Lalai.

Agha Lalai told the AP that each wounded person has received $11,000 and that they were told the money was from U.S. President Barack Obama. Community elder Jan Agha has confirmed the same figures.

The defense attorney for Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the soldier charged Friday with 17 counts of murder, has said the military lacks much of the physical evidence necessary to establish a solid case against his client. But prosecutors say there is ample evidence: surveillance video, shell casings and more. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

The American official who handed over the money said it was not compensation, but the U.S. government offering to help the victims and their families, Kandahar provincial council member Haji Nyamat Khan said.

But a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force, Col. Gary Kolb, said the money was compensation.

Most driving guidelines ? including those now issued by AAA and most state transportation agencies ? now say you should lightly grip the wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions.

If you're a conscientious motorist who still does everything the way your driver's-ed instructor told you to, you're doing it all wrong.

For decades, the standard instruction was that drivers should hold the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 positions, as envisioned on a clock. This, it turns out, is no longer the case. In fact,?driving that way could cost you your arms or hands in particularly gruesome ways if your airbag deploys.

Instead AAA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and many driving instructors now say you should grip the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock. A few go even further, suggesting 8 and 4 to avoid the airbag mechanism as much as possible, but what formal research has been published on the varieties of hand positions suggests that this may lessen your control of the car.

Safer cars make old-school ways dangerous
In its latest guidelines for effective steering, distributed by state and private driving instructors nationwide, the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association advises that "recommendations relative to hand position on the steering wheel have become more flexible."

As cars have become safer over the years, "the steering wheel and associated mechanisms (have) changed dramatically," it says, meaning the familiar driving maneuvers "needed to turn the wheel have all changed." Principal among the changes is the incorporation of airbag modules in the steering column, which are designed to deploy upward to protect your head and chest.

Where to put your hands The American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association, the trade group for driving instructors, gives this advice: - Both hands should be placed outside of the steering wheel on opposite sides. - Your grip should be firm, yet gentle. - Use your fingers instead of the palms of your hands and keep your thumbs up along the face of the steering wheel. - Never turn the wheel while gripping it from the inside of its rim.

That means the higher up the wheel your hands are, the more likely they are to be directly over the plastic cover when it opens ? that is, when superhot nitrogen gas flashes and inflates the bag at 150 to 250 mph.

Among the injuries the NHTSA reports from improper placement of the hands when an airbag deploys are amputations of fingers or entire hands, traumatic fractures and a particularly stomach-churning injury called "degloving," which ? trust us ? you definitely don't want to look up.

AAA says the bags can also slam your hands directly into your head, causing broken noses and concussions.

"If the bag is going to go, it's going to take my hand and put it into my face ? either one of my hands," Bob Hendrickson, head of AAA's network of driving schools in central Indiana, told NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis.

Experts also say new research in ergonomics suggests that what's called "parallel position" makes for safer driving in general.

Parallel position "improves stability by lowering the body's center of gravity and reduces unintended and excessive steering wheel movement which is a primary cause of young driver fatalities," the Texas Department of Public Safety says in guidelines for new drivers (.pdf).

In plain English, that means "9 and 3," said Dallas police Sgt. Paul Hinton, who teaches law enforcement officers how to drive safely in emergencies like highway chases or when facing a wrong-way driver.

"That way I can go 180 degrees (one way), 180 degrees back the other way and then back to center," Hinton told NBC station KXAS of Dallas. "That's the way I'm going to be able to change lanes (safely)."

One other thing
You're also turning wrong. That ship captain's-style "hand over hand" thing is now out.

Instead, you're supposed to "push-pull" ? that is, push the wheel up with one hand and pull it down with the other, without crossing over.

The reason is the same, State Farm's auto insurance division says in its guidelines for beginning drivers:

"Hand-over-hand maneuvers during turning should be avoided to prevent arms from being in front of a deploying airbag in the event of a crash. Serious injuries may result during such occurrences."

Five Favorite Films with Josh Hutcherson

Josh Hutcherson is only 19 years old, but he's already amassed an impressive resume in Hollywood, delivering strong performances in big mainstream fare (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) and critically-acclaimed indies (The Kids Are All Right). He stars in the hotly-anticipated The Hunger Games, playing the good-natured, protective Peeta Mellark. In addition, Hutcherson stars in the forthcoming Red Dawn remake, and acts as an executive producer on the high school horror/comedy Detention. In an interview with RT, Hutcherson shared some of his favorite movies; in addition, he discussed his excitement about bringing the Hunger Games to big screen life and why the movie's action scenes reminded him of his childhood in Kentucky.

Fight Club. That was one of those movies I saw a long time ago, way before I should have seen it, and the acting and the story in that blew my mind. That is probably one of the bigger movies that made me want to be a good actor. The characters are amazing and the story is so cerebral and hard to follow; it's really a thinker that really kind of got me super interested in that kind of movie.

When did you see it?

My parents would kill me, but I saw it when I was like 10 or 11 years old.

Whoa, yeah, I don't know if you'd get all the nuances then.

Exactly. But I was obsessed with it and watched it many times.

White Men Can't Jump. That's one that, every time it comes on TV, I sit down and watch the whole thing. I love basketball, and I love that story, and I just think it's a really cool movie.

So you grew up in Kentucky. Are you a Louisville fan, a University of Kentucky fan?

UK. University of Kentucky, die-hard.

Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011; 92% Tomatometer)

Drive. That movie was just awesome. I love Ryan Gosling in it, the story was so great, the cinematography, the music, everything about that movie. I could watch it over and over again.

The Lion King (Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, 1994; 89% Tomatometer)

The Lion King, which is surprising. However, growing up, that movie was so seminal to my childhood. I watched it again when it was rereleased a couple months ago in 3D in theaters, and that movie holds up. It's an amazing movie, and it came out in 1994 or whatever it was. Just for me, there were so many morals in that movie that had been a part of my life since I was a little kid.

The final one is Cool Hand Luke. Paul Newman's the man. I love him in everything, and his character in that is just amazing. I love the story. It's so simple; not much happens, but everything happens. I love it.
