WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Approval for the HIV drug Isentress (raltegravir) has been expanded to include children and adolescents ages 2-18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
The drug is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor that helps slow the spread of the AIDS-causing virus throughout the body, the agency said in a news release. It was first approved for adults in October 2007.
The twice-daily pill is available in a chewable form for people aged 2 to 11, and in non-chewable form. Clinical testing of the drug among 96 children and teens with HIV-1 infection showed 53 percent of patients had undetectable blood HIV levels after 24 weeks, the FDA said.
The most common reported side effects of Isentress included trouble sleeping and headache.
The drug does not cure HIV infection, and patients must take Isentress continually to ensure ongoing reduction in HIV-related illness, the FDA stressed.
The drug is produced by Merck & Co., based in Whitehouse Station, N.J.

Drake preps intimate 'Club Paradise' Tour as Big Sean finishes Finally Famous Over Everything mixtape.

L.A. Power 106's Cali Christmas Concert on Friday night got fans in the holiday spirit as headliners Drake, Big Sean and J. Cole took the stage alongside newcomers Audio Push, LoveRance and YG.
Drake, who had a stellar 2011, told MTV News that 2012 will be more about "growth" and "challenging" himself. He's gearing up for his upcoming "Club Paradise" Tour, his first headlining run, which will take place at smaller venues around the U.S. and bigger arenas in the U.K. Drizzy said he loves performing for intimate crowds. "I just like the energy. I like people to feel close to me," he explained.
The Toronto rapper will play for about 6,000 to 9,000 people every night, mostly college students, a demographic he said he feels most loyal to. "I chose to do that because I just feel like those are the kids that downloaded So Far Gone off of October's Very Own that night and have been riding with me ever since," he shared. "I don't want them to ever feel like I left them or like we're disconnected, so I'm just gonna go back and I'm gonna bring them a real tour into those college spaces."
As the second wing of the tour expands overseas to the U.K. toward the end of March, so will his audience size. The 25-year-old admitted he's not yet confident about playing the bigger arenas. "Watching me from a 500-level of an arena, I don't know if I'm mentally there yet," he confessed. "I don't know if I can mentally accept that."
Joined by Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, Drake's North American tour is scheduled to start February 14.
For Big Sean, 2011 was one of the best years of his life. "It's definitely a breakthrough year for me," the Detroit native told MTV News, sporting white mink headgear. "I had my first songs on the radio; I got my first gold and platinum plaques. I've been really having a great time."
Big Sean promised fans that his Finally Famous Over Everything mixtape will be completed near the top of the year. "It's just about done," he said. "Give it a couple more weeks just to shoot some videos, really get it prepared for the people and just really take over."
In addition to the FFOE mixtape, Big Sean will touch down on a couple of songs on Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music compilation, also featuring labelmates Common, Mos Def, John Legend, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Cyhi the Prynce and Mr. Hudson.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Nitrogen from human activity has been polluting lakes in the northern hemisphere since the late 19th century. The clear signs of industrialisation can be found even in very remote lakes, thousands of kilometres from the nearest city. This is shown in new research findings published December 16 in the journal Science.
The research is based on studies of sediment from 36 lakes in the USA, Canada, Greenland and Svalbard, Norway. The researchers have analysed how the chemical composition of the sediment has changed over the centuries. Twenty-five of the lakes all show the same sign -- that biologically active nitrogen from human sources can be traced back to the end of the 19th century.
The nitrogen analyses of the lake sediments show that the changes began around 1895. The results also show that the rate of change has accelerated over the past 60 years, which is in agreement with the commercialisation of artificial fertiliser production in the 1950s. Sofia Holmgren, a researcher in Quaternary Geology at Lund University, Sweden, is the only Swede to take part in the comprehensive study.
"I have studied lakes on Svalbard, where the effects of the increased nitrogen deposition are clearly visible in the algal flora," says Sofia Holmgren.
She explains that both the species composition and production of diatoms -- microscopic siliceous algae -- have changed dramatically in the lakes on Svalbard since the start of the 20th century, with the most significant changes over the past decades.
Combustion of fossil fuels and use of fertiliser are the main sources of the increasing amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere. The nitrogen is transported with air currents and reaches the ground in rain or snow. It can travel thousands of kilometres and the nitrogen thus reaches even the most remote lakes and ecosystems.
Nitrogen is an important nutrient for plants, but overuse in more intensive farming can lead to pollution of watercourses, smog and acid rain in urban environments. However, little is known about the effects in more remote areas. An increasing number of studies of Arctic lakes are now showing major changes to the ecosystems.

LIMA (Reuters) ? Peru said on Wednesday it could reopen negotiations with foes of Newmont Mining's $4.8 billion Conga project, a sign a solution to the month long impasse could be found, after a crackdown coerced protesters to call off their rallies.
A detente might vindicate the harsh strategy of new Prime Minister Oscar Valdes, who froze the assets of regional leaders in Cajamarca, detained high-profile protesters, and imposed a state of emergency to show the government would not tolerate protests against projects.
Valdes, a former army officer, had pushed the strategy while interior minister. He was promoted in a weekend Cabinet shakeup by President Ollanta Humala that critics said would lead to law-and-order crackdowns on protesters and less willingness to use dialogue to solve hundreds of environmental disputes nationwide.
On Tuesday, the governor of Cajamarca, Gregorio Santos, wrote a letter to Valdes inviting him to hold talks, but also calling on him to unfreeze the local government's assets and end the state of emergency.
Valdes responded late on Wednesday in a letter to Santos obtained by Reuters. He recognized the end of the protests and said the government was willing to reopen talks with local authorities to promote regional development, but he did not mention the frozen assets.
"We are hoping dialogue can be restored," Valdes said in the
letter. He said only Humala could decide to end the state of emergency, and reiterated the project's environmental impact study would be reviewed by international experts in an audit.
Protesters who feared the Conga gold mine would disrupt their source of water, a string of alpine lakes, caused Newmont and its Peruvian partner Buenaventura to temporarily halt work last month on the project that would be the largest investment in Peru's mining history.
Newmont has said its environment plan for the mine, which was approved a year ago by the previous government, meets the highest standards in the mining industry and calls for the construction of reservoirs to replace the lakes.
The standoff over Conga has challenged Humala's young presidency as he was supported largely by the rural poor in a June election and promised to hold miners to better social and environmental standards in a country with a high 30 percent poverty rate.
But the Cabinet shuffle on Sunday underscored the one-time leftist's swift move toward the right. He kept investor favorite Luis Miguel Castilla as finance minister and appointed fellow former army officer Valdes to run the government.
Miners consulted by Reuters in recent days have said despite Conga's troubles they are still committed to investing in Peru, a top metals producer, with the majority of its potential untapped and where profits have soared on high global prices. Many said they were redoubling community relations efforts to win local support for their projects.
Anglo American's Peru country manager Luis Marchese said plans for the company's $3 billion Quellaveco project "have not changed," and that the mine could begin producing copper in 2015.
Australia's Metminco Limited also said its $2.2 billion copper and molybdenum project Calatos was moving ahead in southern Peru.
"There are concerns at the moment, but we've never thought of suspending anything, we're trying to do things right," the firm's legal representative, Eduardo Llosa said.
Humala has said repeatedly that he wants mining, which generates 60 percent of Peru's exports and brings needed tax revenue, but he also wants businesses to contribute more to development in rural towns and better respect the environment in a country where a third of the people live in poverty.
The new minister of energy and mines, Jorge Merino, a technocrat appointed on Sunday, echoed the message shortly after taking office this week, saying he would seek mining investment but will try to ensure it helps underserved communities that have not yet seen the benefits of Peru's decade-long boom.
Canada's Candente Copper said its $1.6 billion Ca?ariaco project would depend in part on its own community relations work.
"There is always a possibility that the community rejects the project in consultation, but we are confident in our capacity to communicate," said Ca?ariaco's general manager Marco Marticorena.
