How Intuit Manages 10 Million Lines of Code

CowboyRobot writes ?Intuit launched QuickBooks in 1992, & it has grown into the best-selling retail software for small-business accounting worldwide. QuickBooks is available on multiple platforms with different feature sets (Pro, Premier, Enterprise), in specialized editions (accounting, contracting, etc.), is available on CD or via subscription, & is offered in localized versions for the U.S., Canada, & the U.K. How they manage so many builds is a case-study for large scale programming. ?The Windows version is approximately 80,000 source files, 10+ million lines of C++ code plus a little C# for the .NET parts. Plus assist files, tax tables, files defining local accounting rules, tax & other government reporting forms, upgrade offers ? a lot of files. Every customer gets the full version. Specific feature sets are turned on & off with the license key.? And the lessons are not just technical. ?One surprising lesson is that small teams work, even for very large codebases ? especially, Burt says, in sustaining an entrepreneurial, creative culture.??

If you plan to have an internet site or blog, you?re going to need hosting. Good results . all the choices out there it can be a head ache just searching for the hosting company which will assist in your needs not to mention once you learn that items to ask for.

To help you find the very best hosting strategy as well as providers for your fresh site or blog, consider these types of six factors.

Expenses may vary from just a few bucks a month to be able to hundreds but don?t allow cheap hosting become the just choice you choose to save money. Cheap web hosting can be useful round the 10 dollars range each month however heading more affordable can pose numerous problems with tech assistance, up-time along with other hardware related issues.

Likewise, if you plan in order to sponsor a very big site you may want to consider utilizing a greater ending hardware for example dedicated. When visitors raises or perhaps your website grows, you?ll be satisfied a person didn?t stick to an inexpensive hosting company.

In the event that and when your website gets to be popular a person wish to be stuck with an individual webhost that can?t manage the visitors you can getting. Think about an online host, often look to observe how simple it is to change into a greater paid web hosting plan; this will assist you to prevent bad downtimes and keep your site working.

The best web hosting on earth will be nothing if it keeps going down. When a web host failures, thus did your internet site. Ensure when you?re selecting a hosting company how the company provides a higher percent up-time to ensure that the website is going to be online a lot more than its off-line.

When some thing is supposed to be bad with your web site sometimes it can be due to the website hosting. If it is your hosting company that is having problems, an individual have the ability to make contact with them to make your internet site regress to something easier and working. Look for a hosting business that can offer you 24 / 7 assistance for virtually any hiccups that may occur.

Before you make a decision on the webhost, proceed a little nerdy as well as research the particular backend storage space software program provided around the web host. If you?re running specific software you?ll need to possess several variations of server side encoding different languages such as PHP. Don?t be captured within a payment when you can?t use your number for the fullest extent; find an excellent hosting company that continually revisions their backend.

Totally free hosting offers their worth; mainly which free of charge however you will find far too many problems along with free hosting like down time, lack of customer care as well as bandwidth throttling that makes it important that you stay away from these types of contains. Likewise, free hosting companies usually location ads on your own website to recoup the expenses for web hosting ? you don?t want to number an internet commerce website which may shed product sales as a result of marketing.

Dedication is the word within focused web hosting. Focused hosting is one when a client has an entire net storage space committed to its hosting needs. Large businesses together with excellent every day web page views will go for committed web hosting. On the other hand, shared hosting is a kind of hosting in which the obtainable machine is actually dispersed among many owners. The final customers are generally maintained on one Web Process (IP) tackle. Server sources are splitted among a lot of users. Each business or web site competes regarding resources in what looks like bidding to have an auction. Shared enviroment is the toast of several small business garments. Only starting little means you can find few strikes on the web website as well as websites may be only one or two. Still both committed and shared enviroment are usually forms of reaching out to clients for companies via the web.

How well then will focused hosting compares using shared enviroment? These info acts to give much more insight in to the 2 planets that are paradoxically exactly the same:

Usually, in web hosting, issues do arise. However precisely what noise will anybody make if you are utilizing a shared hosting package deal. Several owners involving shared hosting watch bewildered as well as endlessly since the hardware generates issues with absolutely nothing to accomplish. In fact , the actual limitations for your management are no place. Return to re-read the agreement that is included with this. You ought to be certain your own hosting company is not the hack. However , together with dedicated hosting, a far more reliable company package exists, which range from the lease of the whole hardware. Once again, there exists unlimited use of the particular operating system, software program and also data bank applications.

In case your business keeps growing quickly, several facets of your web presence will change together with this. You might regularly have to tweak your own disk room and also bandwidth and also test out making use of various programs to better serve your own transforming needs. On the discussed number, changing in a way usually entails jumping from one ?package? or even ?plan? to another. These types of plans are generally pre-specified and could or even may not serve your own instant demands. They may be full of programs you don?t yet need, but absence one single program you do. Or perhaps the next jump way up from the current plan has many much more hard drive room and also bandwidth than you need right now. Having a committed server plus a dedicated web hosting deal, you may make adjustments incrementally.

Great Story About Why Follow Up is KEY in Network Marketing

The other day I was chatting with our sponsor about business strategies and I happened to mention how grateful we are that she introduced us to the opportunity back in 2009 because it had completely changed the direction of our lives. I was a little? familiar with how she was introduced to our company, but I always love hearing a good story, so I asked her to share it with me again.

She was given some of our products as a gift during a challenging time in her life. She loved the products and how they helped her so effectively, so she decided to enroll as a wholesale customer. However, despite loving the product, an entire year went by without her reordering. It just happened to be the wrong time in her life. So, about the time her account was going to expire, she received a phone call from her sponsor letting her know that her account was about to go inactive.

During that conversation, something changed and our sponsor decided right then and there that she was going to pursue it as a business. Timing and circumstance had changed. Her mind was now open to the possibility. She began sharing by hosting small gatherings at her home and sharing the amazing products with whoever was interested.

Fast forward a couple of years and she invites Alina and I to a home gathering to learn about the products. Alina was excited, I was not. I thought it had to be a scam. Long story short, I eventually removed my ?blocks? and began studying our products and the network marketing industry. I quickly fell in love with both. Fast forward again to the present day, just shy of 3 years after we were introduced to this amazing opportunity and Alina and I are ?retired? from our careers as massage therapists. We work full-time from home, make our own schedule, travel constantly and earn a very comfortable residual income from home, doing something that we absolutely love!

The moral of my story: you never know what the compounding effect of your actions will be over the course of years! If that person had not called our sponsor that day she was about to expire and our sponsor had?not made that decision to begin sharing, OUR lives would be completely different! That one phone call that day many years ago will impact literally THOUSANDS of people! Likely HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people over the coming decades!

Pick up the phone.

Follow up with people.

Invest your time in building relationships.

You never know who will be the next superstar! You never know who will be ready for something new. And even if someone is about to expire, call them! You never know what has changed for them. They deserve it. And the people they will help deserve it too! You never know what a difference just one simple phone call can make.

If this helped you out, do us and someone else a favor and like it up above, or share it by clicking on one of the icons below!

Remember,? you can keep selling your time, or you can start to share your lifestyle ? it's up to you!

To your success,

Rob & Alina

Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

While it is possible to improve a home's energy efficiency in any climate, the predominant weather in an area has an impact on which efficiency measures will be the most valuable. For example, in especially cold areas such as Juneau or especially hot areas such as Phoenix replacement windows can cause a marked change in the cost of heating or cooling a house, whereas the impact of new windows in a more moderate climate will be less.

Any time you set out to improve your home's energy efficiency there are three dynamics to keep in mind. First, generating energy at your home from a clean source is far more efficient. Second, lighting your home more efficiently cuts down on energy consumption. Third, heating and cooling your home more efficiently is often the single most important area of overall efficiency.

The climate that you live in will, to a great degree, dictate your ability to generate power on your property. Those who live in a rainy climate, for example, won't benefit from solar panels the way that those who live in a sunny climate will. And it's pointless to install a windmill where there isn't any wind. But if you can generate power it's a good idea to do so: energy burns off in wires, so the shorter the distance is between production and plug the better.

One exception is a geothermal well, which generates power based on the exchange of heat between one end of a rod that is sunk deep into the ground and the other end of the rod, which is exposed. The temperature below the ground is fifty-six degrees Fahrenheit all the time, so any time the temperature above the ground is different (higher or lower) a geothermal well can generate electricity.

But producing power is only one way to increase efficiency. Reducing your home's consumption of power is just as important, and one of the most significant consumers of power is lighting. This can be changed by switching high efficiency light bulbs for the standard ones or by correcting bad habits. Simply turning the lights off when you leave a room can save a lot of electricity and substantially improve efficiency.

Beyond these simple fixes, it is possible to improve the way you light your home by making better use of natural light. In older homes that tend to have smaller windows, you can make a significant change by increasing the size and quantity of those windows. Even without structural changes, using mirrors to reflect (and reuse) natural light can greatly reduce your reliance on artificial lights powered by electricity.

Most people spend the most money on heating and cooling their homes, which means that heating and cooling use the most power. This can be mitigated by installing newer, more efficient equipment, as well as by improving the insulation of your home to bring it up to today's construction standards. The better insulated a home is, the less affected it is by the temperature outside.

In addition to re-insulating the home, replacing windows can demonstrably improve efficiency. The value of new windows has been well enough established that in hot places like Los Angeles and Phoenix replacement windows qualify for rebates from most utilities. Replacing the windows creates a good (and often subsidized) opportunity to expand the size of windows wherever possible, increasing the amount of natural light available inside the home.

Insight: At least three banks seen central to Libor rigging

(Reuters) - New details from court documents and sources close to the Libor scandal investigation suggest that groups of traders working at three major European banks were heavily involved in rigging global benchmark interest rates.

Some of those traders, including one who used to work at Barclays Plc in New York, still have senior positions on Wall Street trading desks.

Until now, most of the attention has involved traders at Barclays, which last month reached a $453 million settlement with U.S. and UK authorities for its role in the manipulation of rates. Now, it is becoming clear that traders from at least two other banks - UK-based Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc and Switzerland's UBS AG - played a central role.

Between them, the three banks employed more than a dozen traders who sought to influence rates in either dollar, euro or yen rates. Some of the traders who are being probed have worked for several banks under scrutiny, raising the possibility that the rate fixing became more ingrained as traders changed jobs.

The documents reviewed by Reuters in analyzing the traders' involvement included court filings by Canadian regulators who have been investigating potential antitrust issues; settlement documents with Barclays filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington and by the Financial Services Authority in the U.K.; and a private employment lawsuit filed by a former RBS trader in Singapore's High Court.

The scandal, which began to come to light in 2008, has become a time bomb for regulators and a big focus for politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. At issue is the manipulation between at least 2005 and 2009 of rates that are used to determine the cost of trillions of dollars of borrowings, including everything from home loans to credit card rates.

One former Barclays employee under scrutiny, Reuters has learned, is Jay V. Merchant, according to people familiar with the situation. Merchant, who oversaw the U.S. dollar swaps trading desk at Barclays in New York, worked for the bank from March 2006 to October 2009, according to employment records maintained by the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

Merchant currently holds a similar position at UBS, where he works out of the Swiss bank's offices in Stamford, Connecticut, according to FINRA. He did not return requests for comment.

People familiar with the investigation said authorities are looking at whether some individuals on Merchant's trading desk tried to influence the rate on Libor by communicating with other traders in London to get a higher return on certain swaps the desk was trading. His specific role is unclear.

The Department of Justice declined to comment.

Merchant's attorney, John Kenney of Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney, did not respond to requests seeking comment.

A UBS spokeswoman said that the bank has "no reason to believe Mr. Merchant has engaged in any improper conduct at UBS." The spokeswoman, who noted that Merchant is on a two-week vacation, declined to comment on the broader investigation.

Barclays declined to comment. In a statement, an RBS spokeswoman said the bank is cooperating with the investigation.

SPREAD FROM BARCLAYS

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that federal prosecutors in Washington have begun reaching out to lawyers for some of the individuals under scrutiny as they get closer to bringing possible criminal charges.

The dollar and euro rate-rigging appears to have begun in earnest in early 2005 in the dollar market, according to the documents reviewed by Reuters. By August of that year, Barclays traders were reaching out to traders at other big global banks to manipulate their rates to make them favorable to Barclays' trading positions.

Soon, the trading had crossed to the euro rate markets, according to the settlement documents filed in the Barclays investigation. And by 2007, traders at RBS and UBS were seeking to influence the yen rate market, according to documents filed in 2011 in Singapore's High Court and in Canada's Ontario Superior Court.

Traders at Barclays are believed to have participated in manipulating the rate for the dollar and the rate for the euro known as Euribor, according to documents filed in the Barclays settlement last month.

RBS and UBS traders are a focus of the global investigation because of their alleged involvement in seeking to influence yen-denominated rates.

Two RBS traders in London, Brent Davies and Will Hall, are alleged to have agreed to help a trader at UBS, Thomas Hayes, to manipulate yen Libor, according to court documents filed by the Canadian Competition Bureau.

UBS is cooperating with Canadian and U.S. authorities, according to people familiar with the situation.

Hayes worked at UBS from 2006 to 2009. He later moved to Citigroup where he remained until 2010, after which he left the bank. Hayes, Davies and Hall could not be reached for comment.

The documents reveal that Hayes also contacted traders at other banks in London to get them to manipulate yen rates. They include Peter O'Leary at HSBC Holdings Plc, Guillaume Adolph at Deutsche, and Paul Glands at JPMorgan. A second UBS employee sought to get a Citigroup trader, who formerly had worked at UBS, to influence rates.

None of these traders could be reached for comment.

CONDONED

In addition, a former trader at RBS, Tan Chi Min, said in a wrongful termination lawsuit filed in the Singapore High Court in 2011 that he was forced out for "improperly seeking to influence" the setting of Libor. Tan, who ran a trading desk at RBS, said in the suit that improper rate-rigging was known by some at the bank and condoned.

Tan denied trying to manipulate Libor, and alleged in the 2011 court filing, and one in March this year, that about a half dozen other RBS traders openly tried to request specific rates.

Tan's attorney, N. Sreenivasan, declined to comment because the court case is ongoing.

Beyond traders at the three European banks, authorities are still probing the role of others.

For example, traders at JPMorgan Chase & Co also interacted with some of the traders under scrutiny who worked for Barclays and RBS, according to a person familiar with the situation and court documents filed in Singapore.

Similarly, Deutsche Bank AG also had several employees whose trading is under scrutiny by authorities, according to people familiar with the situation and court documents filed in Canada.

JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank declined to comment.

Costas recalls Israel athletes killed at '72 Games

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC's Bob Costas noted a controversy over honoring Israeli athletes killed at the Olympics 40 years ago during his coverage of the opening ceremony but stopped short of offering his own protest.

The International Olympic Committee had declined a request to hold a moment of silence during the ceremony to acknowledge the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches killed by Palestinian gunman in Munich in 1972. Costas called that decision insensitive during an interview this month and indicated he would call for his own moment of silence when Israeli athletes marched into the Olympic Stadium on Friday.

Costas' comments took his bosses by surprise. Jim Bell, executive producer of the NBC's telecast, said this week that Costas hadn't brought it up with him before the interview.

As the athletes marched in Friday, Costas said that IOC President Jacques Rogge led a moment of silence for the late Israelis this week before about 100 people at the Athlete's Village.

"Still, for many, tonight with the world watching is the true time and place to remember those who were lost and how and why they died," Costas said.

After a five-second pause, NBC cut to a commercial.

Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, which promotes Jewish causes, said he appreciated Costas bringing up the issue, though he didn't expect a moment of silence.

"He established a sense of history and decency and sensitivity, I would say, in the tradition of Jim McKay," Foxman said. The late McKay is the former ABC sportscaster who anchored coverage of the 1972 attack.

Easy Video Marketing Tips for Your Internet Business

Home
? Internet Marketing ? Easy Video Marketing Tips for Your Internet Business

Have you considered using videos to market your products/services? If not, now?s the time! Video marketing is up and coming, so you better use it to your advantage before it loses its appeal. Given below are some simple tips to help you on the way.

You want to create a video because you want to work with it to get traffic to your website. However, in order to get visitors to your site, you have to do more than just make a video and post it online. You have to have a strong call to action during most of the video and especially by its conclusion. Many new video marketers don?t focus on this and start wondering why they aren?t getting any response from the videos. Your call to action needs to be aggressive and dynamic. It must paint an exact picture for the reader of what should be done. You can?t leave the reader in total confusion about the next step, you have to explain to them what needs to be done. For example, a few people want the readers to put feedback at the end of the video and others want them to come to the actual website. The kind of call to action doesn?t matter as much as how you actually do it. So remember that your call to action will be able to tell you how successful your video will bring sales from your traffic. Don?t forget to properly edit your video. This is one thing that many marketers overlook because they think that they have done everything that needs to be done. But you should make video correction and ensure that everything is okay. First of all, you?ll want to delete any unnecessary parts so that the video is crisp and short. Secondly, you?ll want to reinstate your call to action in the credits of video, so that no part of the video goes to waste. You don?t want to miss any chances that you may have to bring up the call to action. Aside from that, you have to be positive that you created a quality video just like you wanted it to be. Don?t worry about finding a good editing tool, as almost all computers have it by default.

The common mispractice of not looking directing at the camera, is something to avoid. When you?re shooting, you?re talking to your viewers as if it?s face to face.

Give the video a one-on-one feel. Creating a momentary personal bond with the viewer is a key. If the viewer is more comfortable, the trust level increases. Do not make the viewer feel out of place by looking elsewhere during the shoot, it is inadvisable.

In conclusion, you can use video marketing to your advantage in many kinds of ways, but it is how you do this that is more important than what you actually do.

Buying Websites Explode With Real Estate Investors Showing How ...

No matter how you stack it, there are a variety of ways to make money online (and no, we?re not talking about those ?make money online? scams that promise mega millions overnight). Of course, a majority of online entrepreneurs have a website that allows them to generate income in whatever niche or market they decide. It?s practically essential to have a website if you want to earn any serious money online or offline now days.
Websites = Virtual Real Estate
Website investing is much like real estate in the virtual world. They act similar to rental property by creating passive income each month, all without much maintenance or upkeep involved (that?s after the initial work to get things going, of course). This is one of the major reasons behind the explosive growth in revenue generated online over the past few years.
With the user base of the internet growing more and more each day, more people are building a passive monthly income by owning and operating a fleet of websites. Like real estate investors rather than build websites on their own, many savvy investors are in the business of buying websites that are already established.
Think about it ? you could invest your time into a few websites completely from scratch, waiting days, months or years for that first bit of revenue to flow through or would you rather buy websites that are already producing income, allowing you to start making money from day one!
How to Buy Websites
Unfortunately, it isn?t as easy as taking a wad of cash and throwing it at any revenue generating website ? there are a few special techniques involved (although not difficult) that you?ll need to learn before jumping into the website buying game. Just like any business investor, you need to be able to have an eye for potential, seeking sites you can purchase at bargain prices that require minimal tweaking for maximum earning potential.
Finding websites to purchase is a fairly simple process. Various auction sites (such as Flippa.com or eBay) are the normal places to find deals on websites that perform. In fact, the real bargains are never exposed to the general public. The best way to get your hands on top performing websites for a steal is to be on the inside and learn the insider secrets.
You don?t go to the local real estate broker to find houses that are selling for half price.. The reason is the broker would have already bought it.
Buying Websites for Long-Term Wealth
It?s no secret that buying websites can create long-term wealth. All it takes is someone with an eye for opportunity and a passion for earning some serious cash online and who can follow simple instructions. Are you next? 18words add

Boomerang Kids Have Some Rules For Mom And ... - Huffington Post

Some boomerang kids may be able to recall having this feeling growing up: There's an entire world waiting for me that my parents do not want me to experience. Nowhere did I feel this teenaged re-sentiment as strongly as I did when the rented van carrying my mom, dad, two younger brothers, an aunt visiting from Nigeria (who was in the backseat braiding my hair) and all of my worldly possessions rolled into the parking lot of my first-year college dorm on move-in day.

I angled my face as close to the window as propriety -- and the length of the hair my aunt had a firm grip on -- would allow. These were the people I was supposed to be with: the studious co-eds in the admitted student material moving off the glossy page and living the "Life of the Mind" right in front of me!

The 9' x 11' room I shared with a boisterous roomie who played Korean drum on her twin XL bed and had a taste for 190-proof grain alcohol seemed luxuriant compared to the freedom-stifling entirety of my home back in Kansas City. Chicago became my adopted hometown for the next six years, and while I didn't make good on my promise to never return to "Cow Town," I definitely had no intention of moving back home, especially after moving in with my college boyfriend my senior year.

Fast forward to February 28, 2010 and me driving Bessie the Uhaul van on what I called my "Trail of Tears 2010." I don't know what made me cry harder: the fact that I had an expensive graduate degree, but no gainful employment or prospects to show/pay for it; the fact that I had ended an almost six-year long relationship with the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with; or the sight of the familiar peach shingles and burgundy beams on the front of my home.

I wasn't alone. According to Pew Research Center, 29 percent of boomerang kids aged 25 to 34 had found themselves moving back in with mom and dad. This is far from a case of failure to launch -- it's the economy's failure to launch us into the lives we grew up working toward and were promised. Unemployment figures are at 13.7 percent for folks in their early 20s, compared to 6.3 percent for those in their 40s and 50s, Bloomberg reports, and 78 percent of those polled in the Pew study said they didn't have enough money "to lead the kind of life they want" -- if they did, I doubt they would be so keen on moving in with mom and dad. So we end up back in the nest, which can lead to some boundary issues as we who have lived as full-fledged adults for years are shoehorned back into our high school selves under your roof.

"When you live with your parents as an adult, they're not in charge of you and that's a different dynamic than all the years you spent with them before," said Bourree Lam, a friend who lived with her parents for two months. "There's a lot of navigating on both sides."

For me the upside of living rent-free and getting to spend time with my family again was diminished by every peek into my bedroom, every loaded question, every request to be home at a decent hour and to let them know just where I was. (Just as I'm sure the joy of having their first-born and only daughter back home was shot to heck by her tendency to not do dishes as quickly as they would've liked.)

Yet some families seem to avoid the messiness that can occur when boomerang kids come back to the homestead. Amy Zimmerman, mother to Jana Levinson, who has lived back at home for a year after graduating from the University of Wisconsin, said that her family was "doing a great job of not killing each other."

Even with the old rules back in place now that Jana is living at home again? "We do not have many rules; we think that would be sort of ridiculous at this stage of life," Zimmerman said. "It is more about respect for each other's time and space?I think of that as considerate roommate behavior more than parenting."

Both Amy and Jana said they were happy to have the chance to "reconnect" after years apart. "My parents have always respected my boundaries, especially after I started college, so I wasn't too worried about butting heads with them," Jana said. "They've been very understanding about how hard the transition is from college to the real world and honestly are the only people that are willing to listen to me complain about it."

"My advice to other families in this situation would be to keep aware of the pressures and schedules that each family member is under and take that into account for daily living," Amy said. "This is not high school and teenagers anymore. The things that used to cause friction have been long outgrown and choices are choices made as an adult."

As a former boomerang kid, I can offer six rules to help create a harmonious experience:

  • We get that we're living under your roof again, but try not to rub it in. It makes the fact that we couldn't avoid moving back home that much harder to bear.
  • Get a feel for what topics aren't good ones to harp on. General inquiries into our job status, romantic possibilities and the like can be fine, but no one likes an inquisition.
  • We get that we may be better at technology than you are, but we are not your 24/7 on-call IT help desk. Seriously.
  • Having us back home does not mean that you've instantly acquired a new, unpaid chauffer/maid/butler/handservant/ gopher. We can run a few errands, sure. But try not to exploit our presence.
  • Respect our space and our need for privacy. If it was important to us when we were kids, it's even more important to us as adults back home.
  • Continue to love us and support us unconditionally. It's nice.

Check out the slide show below for more advice for parents facing the prospect of a child moving back home, or who are right in the thick of it. It can be trying, but don't worry: 48 percent of those polled by Pew said the experience didn't affect their relationship with their parents.

Obama and Romney fight for suburban women in Colo.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? If President Barack Obama wins this swing-voting state, and a second term as president, voters like Paula Burky will probably be the reason.

"He understands women," said Burky, a Westminster resident who last month decided to vote for Obama.

Both the Democratic president and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, see women ? specifically suburbanites from their 30s to their 50s ? as critical to victory in Colorado as well as in other hard-fought places like Virginia and Nevada where polls also show close contests. That means this group of voters may also hold the key to winning the White House.

The state of the campaign in the sprawling Denver region ? modest neighborhoods and upscale subdivisions near the city give way to retail complexes, industrial parks and front-range ranches at the outskirts ? illustrates how the fight is playing out across the nation, and how both candidates are seeking to woo these female voters in different ways.

Obama has stirred passions among Colorado women by stoking fears about abortion rights, spending the past few weeks sharply criticizing Romney in ads for proposing to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood and opposing the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

Romney, in turn, has paid for mail and automated calls in Colorado decrying Obama's handling of the sluggish economy's effect on women.

Just over 100 days until the election, polls in Colorado show a close race, though it's unclear how the electorate's psyche will be impacted by last week's shooting massacre at a suburban Denver movie complex and a summer wildfire season that has scorched countless homes and businesses.

For now at least, Obama has had the edge over female voters nationally and he is focusing on a particularly promising subset: college-educated women. Fifty-five percent of college-educated women preferred Obama in a June Associated Press-GfK poll, while 40 percent preferred Romney.

Women with college degrees make up 27 percent of Colorado voters, according to exit polls from the 2008 election, higher than the national average of 23 percent. That puts Colorado in league with other prime Romney-Obama targets, Virginia and New Hampshire.

Burky is among those who have gravitated toward Obama. She and her husband were unemployed for eight months until recently, while their teenage daughter was recovering from cancer. Burky was swayed by Obama's action last spring ? opposed by Romney ? to make it easier for women to obtain birth control, a move she said has economic repercussions.

"If women are choosing abortion because they are in dire economic straits, I have a moral obligation to vote for the candidate who is going to help them," Burky said.

Jill Wildenburg, an Obama supporter who lives in Englewood, calls the president's focus "huge because if women's reproductive rights are marginalized, then women are marginalized."

To press his argument that he's on the side of women, Obama sponsored a national women's summit last month in Colorado ? in Jefferson County ? featuring senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett and "Desperate Housewives" actress Eva Longoria. The week before he dispatched first lady Michelle Obama to Arapahoe High School in Centennial.

Obama is partly borrowing from the playbook of Colorado Democrat Michael Bennet's winning U.S. Senate race in 2010. Bennet narrowly beat Ken Buck after painting him as extreme in pointed TV ads about the Republican's opposition to abortion rights and popular forms of birth control. He carried Arapahoe and Jefferson counties by a combined 10,000 votes, about a third of his narrow margin over Buck.

"That portrayal of Buck is what beat him," said Democratic pollster Paul Harstad, an adviser to Bennet who also does polling for Obama's campaign.

Some Romney backers argue that Obama is attempting to distract female voters from the economy by emphasizing abortion.

"It has nothing to do with abortion," said Vickie Dow of Centennial, an upscale Arapahoe County suburb. "I'm worried about the economy. I'm really afraid things have gone downhill terribly."

Unemployment in Colorado was 8.2 percent in June, the same as nationally. It has ticked up slightly statewide and proportionally in Arapahoe and Jefferson counties, Denver's south and west suburbs where more than 20 percent of the state's population lives, after a slow decline over the past year when it dipped below the national average.

Romney, meanwhile, is seeking to court women like Debbie Brown of Centennial. She agrees with Republican pollsters who say that women are more acutely aware of economic ups and downs. Often household budget managers, women are more sensitive to fluctuations in the economy and see them as destabilizing to their families.

"It actually becomes a heart issue for them because they care so much about their families," said Brown, whose husband recently began working again after being unemployed for nine months.

Four years ago, Obama carried Colorado, which offers nine Electoral College votes, by 9 percentage points. The outcome in November is expected to be much closer, with recent public polls showing a tight race.

Romney views Colorado, which Republicans carried in every presidential election from 1968 to 2004, as a valuable potential pick-up. Obama aides argue that his 2008 victory is proof the Southwest's Republican trend is changing as Latinos, who typically vote Democratic, increase in numbers.

The candidates and their allies have combined to spend roughly $25 million in television advertising in Colorado ? split nearly evenly between the two.

Researchers read drug patterns in European sewage

Drug testers sifting through raw sewage in 19 European cities found the highest cocaine use in Antwerp, a Nordic preference for methamphetamines and Amsterdam unsurprisingly leading in cannabis use.

From the biggest-ever European drug analysis of human waste samples, the research team deducted that the continent used about 350 kilograms of cocaine every day while marijuana remained the most popular illicit drug.

"Through research into the sewer, we can determine how big the drug market in a city is," coordinator Kevin Thomas of the Norwegian Institute for Water Research said of the study covering cities in 11 European countries.

The team took samples from the inlets of 21 sewage treatment plants servicing a combined population of some 15 million people -- about two percent of the continent's population.

The samples were taken on seven consecutive days from March 9, 2011, and then analysed in the lab.

The results published Thursday in the journal Science in the Total Environment revealed the highest average cocaine use in the Belgian port city of Antwerp followed by Amsterdam (Netherlands), Valencia (Spain), Eindhoven (Netherlands), Barcelona (Spain), London (UK), Castellon (Spain) and Utrecht (Netherlands).

The Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven showed the highest sewage loads of the nightclubber's drug ecstasy, though the authors said Utrecht's figures were probably spiked by drug dumping in a police raid on an ecstasy factory two days prior to the study.

Antwerp and London also had high levels of ecstasy use, but none was detected in Castellon, Umea (Sweden) or Stockholm (Sweden).

The study said the highest methamphetamine use was measured in Helsinki and Turku in Finland, Oslo (Norway) and Budweis in the Czech Republic.

Methamphetamine, also known as "crystal meth", "glass" or "ice", is a stimulant that is relatively cheap and easy to produce.

Illicit use of the related compound amphetamine or "speed", originally used to treat some medical conditions, was highest in Eindhoven and Antwerp.

For cannabis, the highest levels by far were measured in the Dutch capital, which is a popular soft-drug tourist destination in a country that tolerates and regulates marijuana use.

About seven percent of the European population aged 15 to 64 used cannabis, according to the report, with Paris the second biggest user in the study.

The researchers found drug use spiking on Friday and Saturday nights.

The report cited earlier findings that about a third of European citizens have tried an illicit drug. At least one person dies of an overdose every hour.

Yet monitoring illicit drug use is difficult as people are prone to lying in surveys for fear of being caught out -- leaving drug controllers without much-needed data.

Studies like these "can provide a diluted and pooled community urine sample that can deliver objective near real-time estimates of the total quantities of illicit drugs being used," said the report.

"We are not there to replace the police," Sara Karolak of France's Paris Sud university, which took part in the survey, told AFP.

"We want this method to be used as a prevention tool," she said, adding that a new study has already started, with more countries.

Tips For Finding Commercial Real Estate That Works For Your ...

25 July 2012

Posted by Dennis under: Fl Keys Commercial Real Estate .

Commercial real estate can be hugely profitable and make you wealthy. This type of investing isn?t for the faint of heart, however, you?re also risking a large amount of money on each property you buy.

Buy property that has more units. Having more units in the same property gives you more profit potential without much more work. Many investors tend to shun property with fewer than 10 units, as most subscribe to the idea that there is a direct correlation between the number of units and the amount of money that can be made.

You should concentrate your efforts on one real estate endeavor at a time. Whether your investment choice is retail, land or rental buildings, choose one arena of investment to focus on exclusively for now. Every kind of investment you make should have all of your attention. Start out with only one type of investment, and you will soon master it. This is much more profitable then having just a little experience with many types of real estate.

Take a good look at the property?s surroundings. It is your responsibility to ensure that your property is free from environmental waste or safety hazards. Perhaps you are looking at property located in a flood plain. If so, think again. There are companies that will do environmental studies to evaluate the risk of incremental hazards in the area that the property is located in.

You can definitely gain a lot of money from commercial real estate, money that can keep you and your loved ones happy for years to come. This being said, it takes money to make money, so it is important to protect yourself and your investment by putting in your maximum effort to each and every deal. Use the ideas found in this article in your strategies and you?ll be on your way to amazing results!

When the Olympics Awarded Medals to Artists

Walter Winans won an Olympic gold for sculpture in 1912 Image: Courtesy of Bain News Service

From Our Partner

At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, American Walter Winans took the podium and waved proudly to the crowd. He had already won two Olympic medals?a gold for sharpshooting at the 1908 London Games, as well as a silver for the same event in 1912?but the gold he won at Stockholm wasn?t for shooting, or running, or anything particularly athletic at all. It was instead awarded for a small piece of bronze he had cast earlier that year: a 20-inch-tall horse pulling a small chariot. For his work, An American Trotter, Winans won the first ever Olympic gold medal for sculpture.

For the first four decades of competition, the Olympics awarded official medals for painting, sculpture, architecture, literature and music, alongside those for the athletic competitions. From 1912 to 1952, juries awarded a total of 151 medals to original works in the fine arts inspired by athletic endeavors. Now, on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the first artistic competition, even Olympics fanatics are unaware that arts, along with athletics, were a part of the modern Games nearly from the start.

?Everyone that I?ve ever spoken to about it has been surprised,? says Richard Stanton, author of The Forgotten Olympic Art Competitions. ?I first found out about it reading a history book, when I came across a little comment about Olympic art competitions, and I just said, ?what competitions??? Propelled by curiosity, he wrote the first?and still the only?English-language book ever published on the subject.

To learn about the overlooked topic, Stanton had to dig through crumbling boxes of often-illegible files from the International Olympic Committee archives in Switzerland?many of which hadn?t seen the light of day since they were packed away decades ago. He discovered that the story went all the way back to the Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the IOC and the modern Games, who saw art competitions as integral to his vision of the Olympics. ?He was raised and educated classically, and he was particularly impressed with the idea of what it meant to be a true Olympian?someone who was not only athletic, but skilled in music and literature,? Stanton says. ?He felt that in order to recreate the events in modern times, it would be incomplete to not include some aspect of the arts.?

At the turn of the century, as the baron struggled to build the modern Olympics from scratch, he was unable to convince overextended local organizers of the first few Games in Athens, St. Louis and Paris that arts competitions were necessary. But he remained adamant. ?There is only one difference between our Olympiads and plain sporting championships, and it is precisely the contests of art as they existed in the Olympiads of Ancient Greece, where sport exhibitions walked in equality with artistic exhibitions,? he declared.

We are all susceptible to delusions

In his new book, novelist and former psychologist Frank Tallis explores the psychology behind demonic possession

Your latest novel is about a man who is possessed. Did any of your patients have that belief?
Once a patient came in and said: "I am possessed by a demon." This guy wasn't insane, he wasn't schizophrenic - he just had this particular belief. In my day we called it "monosymptomatic delusion", but now it would be called something like "delusional disorder". That's when you're completely sound and reasonable in every respect except you have one belief that is absolutely bonkers.

Why would an otherwise well person believe something like that?
He was misattributing certain symptoms he had to a demonic presence. When you're possessed, you're supposed to get headaches, and he was getting loads of headaches.

I can't imagine making that assumption myself...
You have to have an openness to it. Lots of people are open to all kinds of spiritual and magical beliefs. An individual could have a perfectly harmless interest in the supernatural but then something happens that triggers this delusion and they get stuck with it, reinforcing it by piling up one misinterpretation after another. If you go out looking for evidence, you will find it.

What kind of evidence?
In my patient's case, he wanted to know the demon's name, so he got a Ouija board out. This shows he had a willingness to go down a particular path. When you think about the way that brains work, our natural inclination is to look for causes.

Could anyone end up with delusions like these?
Theoretically, yes, in the right circumstances. Maybe we all get such episodes in our lives. It's not that unusual for people to think they are seriously ill without much evidence. Who hasn't had a health scare for no good reason? That's taking a symptom and extrapolating, then finding more evidence that supports the belief.

Are there any other examples?
The big one is people suspecting that their spouse is cheating on them. Morbid obsessions about infidelity are relatively common and produce spectacular behaviours, often in individuals who otherwise are OK. In a way, falling in love is kind of monosymptomatic delusion. Even though you're a rational person, you can engage in all kinds of irrational behaviour because you are fixated on a particular individual.

Can these delusions be treated?
In the past they were treated with lots of medication or were perceived as untreatable. But these days, not just monosymptomatic delusions but all forms of psychotic illness are increasingly treated with cognitive behavioural therapy. You cultivate a sort of scientific attitude in the patient, getting them to test their beliefs. It is probably the most important new advance in psychotherapy.
